More than 15,000 potholes and cracked pavements have been repaired by the council since May last year.

They are the bugbear of drivers and cyclists and can cause thousands of pounds worth of damage to vehicles. The cold weather last year made the situation worse by penetrating cracks in tarmac and expanding as it freezes contributing to the holes.

However, the council has invested £6.4m in combating the problem and repair teams have been working tirelessly to fix every one of those dangerous holes along with the worst pavement defects.

So far the total number of repairs they have carried out is 15,467.

Councillor Russell King, transport spokesman, said: "I am sure that residents will have noted, and warmly welcomed, this prolonged campaign to improve the borough’s road surfaces and pavements.

"The council increased its repair budget to £6.4m this year in a response to the sharp rise in road defects that was caused by last winter’s very icy weather. Fortunately the council’s very prudent management of its finances meant that this money could be found to carry out this important work.

"The repair teams have checked every road and pavement in the borough, and when the current works programme has finished, they will be going back to check if any further repairs are needed.

"However, if residents believe they have missed something, or a new defect has recently appeared, please get in touch and the council will have it seen to."
