Litter louts are being hit with on-the-spot fines across Wandsworth.

Between February 26 and March 5, 40 people were slapped with fixed penalty notices for dropping litter.

The culprits are usually caught throwing rubbish on the ground near the borough’s tube and train stations.

Fourteen people were fined for dropping litter outside Clapham Junction station, while another 11 were penalised for doing the same at Tooting Broadway.

Fifteen others were caught in Cranmer Terrace, Tooting, near an entrance to St George’s Hospital.

People given a litter fine have 28 days to pay £80 to the council.

If they fail to do so, they will be summonsed to court where magistrates could impose fines of up to £2,500.

Wandsworth Guardian:

Councillor Jonathan Cook, environment spokesman, said: "The council is doing a good job of keeping the borough’s streets clean and tidy.

"Detailed surveys have shown that 96 per cent of our streets meet rigorous standards of cleanliness, while complaints are currently running at less than one a day. This is an exceptional performance in an inner city borough the size of Wandsworth.

"However, we fully recognise that one small piece of litter on an otherwise spotless pavement can stick out like a sore thumb, which is why we take action against all those we catch dropping litter.

"We know from surveys that our residents value clean streets highly and our approach has the support of the overwhelming majority of local people."
