A ‘calculating’ 21-year-old man has been jailed for five years for raping a woman in the Clapham area.

Police believe Stefan Melbourne, of Sherwood Avenue, Streatham, may have further victims and are still appealing for them to come forward.

On Friday, March 14, he was jailed for five years at Woolwich Crown Court after being found guilty on Wednesday, February 12.

The 28-year-old victim attended the Haven (a rape crisis centre) anonymously after the offence took place on January 22, last year.

She said Melbourne, who she knew, visited her home in the Clapham area of SW4 on the pretence that he had business in the area and needed somewhere to stay the night.

He then threatened her with violence and raped her.

The victim was initially too scared to pursue the matter but eventually felt strong enough to support the prosecution.

Detective Inspector Jim Pryde, from the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command, said: "Melbourne has shown himself to be a calculating and violent individual. He has received a lengthy sentence and will be a registered sex offender on release from prison.

"The victim in this case was naturally scared of having to go to court but was determined to see justice done and her courage and perseverance has resulted in his conviction.

"I believe there may be other victims Melbourne has raped and I urge them to contact police. Specially trained officers will help you through this process."

Investigating officer Detective Constable Jivan Saib added: "The bravery of the victim in this case should be commended. We worked hard with our partners at Rape Crisis to fully support the victim which resulted in her feeling able to give evidence, leading to Melbourne's conviction."

Melbourne will also be required to sign the sex offenders register for life.

Anyone who thinks they may have been a victim of Melbourne should contact police in confidence on 101 or the Sexual Offences, Exploitation and Child Abuse Command directly on 020 8721 4607.
