A turf war is unravelling between a mystery knitter, and someone tired of protesters spinning them a yarn.

On Tuesday we reported on an unusual banner that has popped up in Tooting.

The knitted message, pinned to railings between the High Street and Garratt lane, reads: "Tooting says no to more betting shops."

The sign is likely to be referring to a 23rd betting shop set to open in the area.

Yesterday one of our reporters received a tweet showing a tongue-in-cheek response to the message.

The reply, which is stuck below the banner, reads: "Tooting says no to politicised knitting."

The intensify number of bookmakers in the town has led to a public outcry.

Local businesses have clubbed together to form the Save Our High Street Campaign.

The MP for Tooting Sadiq Khan, who is also opposed to the opening of more bookmakers, said: "Forget knit one purl one, hopefully with this sign the person responsible will knit one, save one.

"There are easier ways to join the campaign though. Anyone can take action by signing our petition at www.sadiqkhan.org.uk."

If you know who knitted the sign please call 020 8722 6343, or email newsdesk@wandsworthguardian.co.uk.
