The father of Marc Hutton, whose body was found in the River Thames last week, fears an adverse reaction to general anaesthetic may have led to his death.

Phil Hutton, 57, a car company manager, described Marc, an accountant and Arsenal supporter, as a loving son who had everything going for him in life.

Marc’s family and friends launched a campaign to try and find him when he went missing from his Putney home, in Sefton Road, on Friday, February 28, following knee surgery nine days before.

However, a body was discovered in the River Thames, near Lots Road, in Imperial Wharf, on Tuesday, March 18, and was soon identified as Marc.

His father, who lives in Ealing, said: “He was a lovely guy. He was very good-natured, very lovely to his friends, and had a good sense of humour.

“He was very loving. We have been getting a huge amount of support from both our family and our circle of friends and Marc’s circle of friends who go back 24 years – who he still sees.

“Everyone was helping with the search process as well. Everyone is very shocked – it is totally out of character.

“What we suspect is he genuinely suffered an adverse reaction to the general anaesthetic nine days before he disappeared.

“It is the only explanation his friends and my family can suggest. Everything was positive for him until a few days after the operation he started to get anxious about [his knee] not healing and other things wrong with him.

“It was pretty much out of the blue. He had the operation on February 19 and he was staying with us while he was recovering and doing work from home. He started to get anxious his knee wasn’t repairing so he visited the hospital and they confirmed it was fine.

“He became more and more worried – it was out of character for him. Hence we don’t think it was him in the right mind. He wasn’t taking any drugs after the operation.

“I’m raising that question with the coroner [about the anaesthetic] but it is going to take a while. In the meantime we are trying to deal with the sad news with help of friends and family – everyone has been very supportive.

“He just got a good new job, moved into a nice new flat with friends he’d known for decades and just passed his accounting exams. He was keen to get his knee better and get back playing sports again.

“For somebody to end up the way he has is so inexplicable. He had everything going in the right direction in his life.”
