Clapham Junction sign proudly welcomes you to 'heart of Battersea'

Wandsworth Guardian: The new sign outside Clapham Junction station The new sign outside Clapham Junction station

Proud Battersea residents are celebrating today after a large sign was erected outside Clapham Junction station welcoming people to the ‘heart of Battersea’.

A campaign launched in 2005 striving to recognise Clapham Junction’s pivotal role in the Battersea district and fighting against a common misconception that it is in Clapham.

Just over five years ago members of the 'SW11tch Back to Battersea' campaign started speaking to Wandsworth Council and the owners of ShopStop in Clapham Junction station.

They were asked to erect a sign above the exit to St John’s Hill with the words ‘Welcome to the heart of Battersea’.

What do you think of the sign? Do you think more needs to be done to remind people Clapham Junction is in Battersea, nor Clapham?

About time. We understand the difficulty of correcting the mistake made by the 19th Century yuppy types when they gave the station the wrong name, in a feeble attempt to make it sound rather better than the perceived low-life area of Battersea at the time.
However, the misconception about the junction and Clapham will only be put right when what passes for the media in London, and elsewhere, bother to do their research properly and get the name of the local area right!!

Thank you for showing this picture and a perfect description of what it depicts. What a great design and at last it shows that Clapham Junction is in the heart of Battersea.

Welcoming folk to the heart of Battersea at Clapham Junction Station - just wait 'till the weekend when all trains will be cancelled due to engineering - and they have to catch rail replacement buses - adding to already poor air quality - then we'll see what they think of Clapham Junction.

Well done for this... now all that remains is the retailers in St Johns Road and the surrounding area to actually realise they too are in Battersea. M&S Clapham - Specsavers Clapham - the Fitness First on the corner of Mossbury Road is apparently on 'Clapham Hill' - the burger place which was the old Wimpy - in Clapham. ASDA might have changed the outside of their store but they still refer to it as ASDA Clapham. The sports shop is (apparently) in Clapham .. and so it goes on.

Topps Tiles and the hotel have both changed to Clapham Junction - but in their defence they both had a Battersea Store.

In some minds (and in some local newspapers) *cough* Clapham appears to start at the River Thames and carries on until the SW4 postcode. Oikishness in the extreme
