The last British prisoner being held at Guantanamo Bay has been diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Shaker Aamer, a father-of-four from Battersea, has been imprisoned in Cuba for 12 years without charge.

Mr Aamer was diagnosed with PTSD following a medical evaluation in prison and now his lawyers are now filing an urgent motion in an American court to fight for his release.

Meanwhile Jane Ellison the MP for Battersea has continued her campaign to see Mr Aamer released back to his family - which is in line with the British Government’s policy.

MP Jane Ellison argues no one should be held without charge or trial for this long

Recently she has written to both Clifford Sloan who was appointed by President Barack Obama to explore ways of closing the Guantánamo Bay and Hugh Robertson MP, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister who leads for the Government on Mr Aamer’s case.

In his response Mr Sloan said: "President Obama made clear in his State of the Union address this past January that this needs to be the year Congress lifts the remaining restrictions on detainee transfers and we close the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay.

"In furtherance of this objective, we continue to pursue vigorously the transfer of detainees approved for transfer, subject to appropriate security assurances and consistent with out humane treatment policy.

"We greatly appreciate the UK Government’s support of the President’s objective to close the Guantanamo Bay detention facility and its offer of assistance."

Mr Aamer, one of 164 prisoners at Guantanamo,is accused of being a close associate of Osama bin Laden, which he denies.

He has been cleared for transfer by both the Bush and Obama administrations, according to Reprieve, the legal charity and human rights group which is representing him.

Last year Prime Minister David Cameron raised Mr Aamer's case with President Barack Obama at a G8 summit and the British government has repeatedly stated that it wants him returned to the UK.

Despite having British residency and a family all based in Battersea US authorities have repeatedly threatened to send him back to Saudi Arabia, his birthplace, against his wishes.
