Two people escaped from a fire in a flat above a shop on Streatham High Road yesterday evening.

Firefighters were called to the shop at 8.22pm on Monday, April 21, where the third floor of the property was damaged, as well as a section of the roof.

Watch Manager Darren Woodhams who attended the incident said, “On arrival, we saw flames coming from a balcony at the back of the building and there was a lot of smoke.

"The fire had started to catch the roof and crews worked quickly to save the roof and ensure it didn’t spread to other properties.”

A large proportion of the third floor of the property was damaged and a section of the roof.

Thirty-five firefighters and officers attended the incident from West Norwood and Tooting fire stations.

The fire was under control by 9.53pm.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, the London Fire Brigade said.
