Five people had to be cut out of a lift by fire fighters in a ‘large scale rescue’ after getting trapped for six hours.

Four young women and a man were on their way home from a night out in the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday when they got trapped in a lift, in between the 18th and 19th floor, in Durrington Tower, Wandsworth Road.

The five party-goers got trapped at about 4am and fire fighters from Clapham fire station tried to get them out.

Soon Lambeth Council lift engineers arrived and tried for two hours to get the lift moving again but were unsuccessful.

Then, at just before 9am, they called out Battersea fire station’s specialist rescue unit who then went down the lift shaft and cut them out.

The technical operation took longer than usual as the Battersea fire fighters had to be extra careful while cutting through the metal with five people underneath the roof.

The London Ambulance Service were also were also called to the scene and, although the five were distressed and dehydrated, nobody was injured.
