The wife of a man who worked for Wandsworth Council for 46 years has thanked his former colleagues for their kindness following his death.

Dedicated council worker Roy Dunn, 68, worked under 45 different mayors and 11 different council regimes laying pavements before he died after a battle with Leukaemia and a fall on April 16.

Wandsworth Times:

His funeral on May 6, in Putney Vale, was heavily attended by his former colleagues and his wife Tina, 54, an online shop assistant, praised them for their kindness in the aftermath of his death.

She said Mr Dunn, a dad of two, hated retirement and used to go back to his old workplace, in the Frogmore Complex, Wandsworth, to have lunch with his former colleagues.

Mrs Dunn, who lives near St Helier Station, added: "He was diagnosed with Leukaemia before he died. It brought us a lot closer together and we had lots of tears and hugs.

"Everyone said to me he was a larger than life character. He had a real good sense of humour and loved animals and children.

"I just wanted to say thank you to Wandsworth Council. His boss gave all the men half a day off and anyone going to the funeral could leave at 10.30am. They gave a huge bouquet of flowers and £200 that will go to Jigsaw4u which is a children’s charity - it was close to his heart.

"As far as I’m aware they are going to erect a bench in the yard and another guy said he was the heart of Wandsworth Council.

"I don’t think Roy realised how liked he was. I was really proud they thought so much of Roy."

Kevin Power, assistant director of operational services at the council, said: "Roy was a highly experienced, dependable and well-liked member of the highway's works section.

"Many ex-colleagues attended his funeral, and the council would like to extend its sympathies to Roy’s family."
