A serious collision has been reported in Balham High Road this afternoon, with drivers and bus passengers told to expect delays this evening.

A man in his thirties was taken to St George’s Hospital major trauma centre suffering from a back injury after the collision involving two cars just before 4pm.

Police said there were two injured parties - a man and a woman - but neither were life threatening.

The road is closed in both directions after the incident near Balham Station in Marius Road.

London Ambulance crews were called to Balham High Road at 3.55pm today and remained on the scene at 5pm.

It is believed the cars involved were a silver Audi and a black Kia.

The incident is said to have happened outside the BP petrol station. Customer services assistant

Kukn Thankathurai said he and colleagues went outside to see what had happened after hearing a loud noise.

He said: "We heard a big sound outside and saw an accident.

"A lady filled up with fuel and turned to the right into the road.

"An Audi car came along and there was an accident.

"It’s a busy road."

Mr Thankathurai said a man was driving the Audi.

He said the woman appeared fine and was talking to police officers, who were also on the scene this afternoon.

A spokesman from the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 3.55pm this afternoon to Balham High Road to reports of a road traffic collision involving two cars.

"We sent two ambulance crews to the scene where they remain."

Firefighters from Tooting were on the scene as well.

Commuters have been told to expect delays as the road is closed while the emergency services deal with the incident.

Bus routes 155,249,255,355 are on diversion via Trinity Road and Nightingale Lane.
