Concerns have been raised after a ‘life-line’ playgroup failed to re-open despite promises from Wandsworth Council.

Eight months ago the Triangle One O’Clock Club, in Emmanuel Road, Tooting Common, closed to the public for renovation work, with parents told it would re-open in April.

This deadline was mised and now Tooting MP Sadiq Khan has discovered it will not reopen until July at the earliest.

The club closed in November so the council could carry out a £120,000 refurbishment and install flood defences after it was plagued by flooding.

The council claim it is the rain which hit London over the winter which has caused the delays.

Parents, who rely on the service, have been travelling to access similar facilities.

Mr Khan said it is not the first time the council had failed to stick to their word when it comes to children’s centre after it emerged earlier this year the privatised Windmill One O’Clock Club would not provide ‘stay and play’ in the afternoons and weekends and would only run twice a week.

The Labour MP said: "Parents feel let down and frustrated by this latest development – they have already been without their One O’Clock club for three months longer than was planned and now they just want the council to be open and honest with them."

Labour councillor for Bedford Rosena Allin-Khan said: "The club has long been a lifeline for local parents, who are really struggling without it."

A council spokesman said: "The project was delayed slightly following the extremely rainy weather that hit London and the south east in the winter months - especially as this part of Tooting Common is prone to localised flooding.

"When it reopens, the new-look centre will offer a full daily range of free children’s and family services including drop-in stay and play, health advice and parenting support."
