Commuters should be celebrating after improvements to Earlsfield station have allowed for more services and new 10 carriage trains to be used on the line.

Improvement works, including the construction of a new booking hall, wider entrance, new staircase, lifts and walkways and additional ticket machines were approved in 2007 and completed last year.

The £8m work also included the extension of platforms two and three and from July 28, the station will be able to accommodate 10 car trains.

Operators South West Trains have also introduced two additional morning trains, departing to Waterloo, at 7.29am and 9.30am.

Tooting MP Sadiq Khan who has long been campaigning for improvements at the station, plans to hold regular meetings with the station manager to monitor how the improvmemnts are working.

Councillor Jonathan Cook, transport spokesman at Wandsworth Council, said: "We’ve made great progress with Earlsfield Station but there is still some way to go.

"We want to see the platform canopies extended, restored waiting rooms, more seats and a publicly available toilet.

"The introduction of longer, higher capacity trains is a long way behind schedule and we need to keep up the pressure until a full ten car services is on the tracks."
