Battersea’s Winstanley and York Road estates have been named as Boris Johnson's first ‘housing zones’ earmarked for regeneration.

The status means the Mayor of London, the Greater London Authority, Transport for London and Network Rail will prioritise the area, working with Wandsworth Council, to regenerate the area.

Boris Johnson has highlighted the estates as a priority

Housing zones are part of the Mayor of London's new draft Housing Strategy which puts forward a range of measures to improve housing supply, encourage building and produce more low cost homes.

Ravi Govindia, leader of Wandsworth Council, said: "Working with local residents we are developing an ambitious masterplan for these two estates that will offer enormous benefits to the community, provide much needed housing and vastly improve the local environment.

"There may also be opportunities to share risk, develop flexible tenures to meet local needs, access funding to support infrastructure improvements and offer greater freedoms over how the project is financed.

"This could include using the proceeds from Right to Buy sales to invest in new homes.

"All this would put our plans to improve the Winstanley and York Road estates on a surer footing and help us create a much better quality of life for the people living here."

Is this left hand and right hand. I thought that Wandsworth Council had already committed money to the regeneration of these estates and that a plan had been drawn up in consultation with local residents. There was a display in York Gardens library. Is this another example of Boris trying to claim credit for the work of others, like with the Barclay bikes (initiated by Ken Livingstone).

If any of you think that the Winstanley & York Road estates will be regenerated into affordable housing - think again - all that will be done is turn the slums into new homes for their rich friends - who on the good side will pay council taxes and not live on benefits - and cost all of us who do pay, more - like those in there now.
