Drinkers were left shocked after a sports car crashed through the window of a busy pub in Battersea last night.

Race goers returning from a day out at Ascot were among the throng enjoying a drink in The Plough, in St John's Hill, when a Maserati GranTurismo crashed into the side of the pub at about 8pm.

The 4.6L Maserati is believed to have collided with a Mercedes before swerving across a pavement and into the glass-fronted bar.

One person was treated for a head injury and another person was treated for shock.

Nobody inside the pub was hurt.

Firefighters from Battersea and Wandsworth were called to sand down the roads as oil from both cars leaked into the street.

One firefighter said: "Fortunately nobody was seriously hurt, but it could have been a lot worse.

"There were a lot of pedestrians walking about at the time, and the Maserati crossed the pavement before hitting the pub.

"It must have come as a big shock to everyone inside."

Another firefighter said many of the people in the pub were well dressed and looked as if they had returned from Royal Ascot.

A staff member at the Plough, a New York-style bar and kitchen, said this morning that the car crashed through the barrier seperating the road and the pavement, before smashing a window.

The bar was still open for business today, he said.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said nobody had been arrested, but both cars had been written off.
