Prepare to Get Active in Wandsworth

Wandsworth Guardian: Prepare to Get Active in Wandsworth Prepare to Get Active in Wandsworth

Wandsworth is setting up for its fifth annual Get Active Day Festival as the event continues to try and motivate and promote fitness across the borough.

Launched in 2010 in the build-up to the London Olympics, the festival has gone from strength to strenght, and now two years after the big event, shows no signs of halting.

Last year’s event attracted more than 5,500 people young and old, with Olympic gold medalist Sophie Hosking on hand to open proceedings, and organisers at Wandsworth Council are hopeful 2014 will exceed that figure.

Activities on the day will include street dance, rugby, tennis, BMX, bouncy castle, boxing and many more.

Assistant chief of leisure and sports officer Tim Fleming says: “The Get Active Wandsworth Festival is now in its fifth year and the number of people taking part and getting healthier and active has grown substantially since it first started in 2010.

“I can’t wait for this year’s event as it brings together the community and shows Wandsworth in a really positive light that we can all be proud of, as well as giving all a chance to learn how to live healthier and more active lifestyles and meet PAWS the Active Wandsworth Panther mascot.”

Using the five rings that symbolise the Olympic spirit as inspiration, the festival aims to promote sport and fitness, splitting the event into five colour coded areas.

The difference in the rings is to attract all types of audiences as there are various sports and activities going on throughout the day in each section.

The black zone will include activities such as urban sports, the yellow zone is activities for younger children, the blue will feature the boxing, the green zone has a lot of space so that team sports can be played, and the red zone is for the adults who come along and want to get involved with fitness classes and yoga.
