A possible World War II bomb has been dug up in Battersea and caused problems on the roads and river.

Police officers were called at 10.20am to Battersea Church Road and cordoned off the area.

A spokesman for the police said: “We were called following the discovery of a possible ordinance.

"Local road closures are in place while officers carry out a controlled explosion.”

River traffic on the Thames may also be stopped for a short time while officers deal with the object.

Drivers and commuters have been warned to avoid the area if possible.

The 170 bus is only running northbound and is on diversion on the southbound route.

Traffic on Battersea Bridge road is slow and one lane in Battersea Church Road is blocked by emergency vehicles.

UPDATE 1.20pm: All roads have re-opened, but some residual delays remain in place.
