A Tooting school is celebrating after turning itself around over five years.

Smallwood Primary School was placed in special measures five years ago but now its most recent Ofsted inspection graded it as ‘good’ with outstanding features.

The school was turned around by the current head Martin Roughley and his staff who focused on the quality of teaching and making sure each child got the help they needed.

Smallwood also received a huge amount of financial support which led to the building of a new children’s centre, an early years’ unit, a new kitchen and a dining hall.

Its expansion meant Smallwood was in a position to take on a one-off ‘bulge-class’ as the demand for school places next year soared in Earlsfield.

Mr Roughley said: "I am absolutely thrilled with the outcome of our recent Ofsted report that reflects the dedication and sheer hard work of all the staff at Smallwood.

"We aim to give all our children an excellent and well-rounded education, to offer them a wide variety of opportunities and to help them to become learners for life."
