A woman has been jailed for eight weeks after stealing meat from Cobham motorway services last month.

A large quantity of meat products with no receipts were found in a vehicle which has stopped in Osbourne Avenue, Stanwell, on June 24.

The two women in the car, Karen Briggs, 48, of Hamilton Avenue, Cobham, and Linda Coulston, 51, of Rowland Way, Ashford, were found in possession of packaged meat and fish from Marks and Spencer, bottles of flavoured sauce from Starbucks and a large quantity of meat from the BP service station at Leatherhead.

Both woman were charged with theft and appeared at Guildford Magistrates' Court on Thursday, June 26.

Briggs pleaded guilty to seven counts of theft and was handed an eight-week prison sentence, while Coulston, who also pleaded guilty, was given a curfew and electronic tag for four months.

She was also given a supervision requirement for 12 months and ordered to pay compensation.

The stolen food was recovered by police and was donated to Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in Old Windsor.

Rebecca Norris, senior re-homer at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in Old Windsor, said: "We are very grateful for the donation and we have been able to use most of the food.

"So far, the cats have enjoyed meals of prawns and smoke salmon whilst the dogs have enjoyed the steak. The rest of the meat selection will be cooked up for future feasts."
