Four schools are set to expand in an attempt to deal with the borough’s school place crisis.

The primary schools, Allfarthing, Hillbrook, Albemarle and Sheringdale, have been granted planning permission to build extra classrooms.

There will also be new play areas built at the three schools based in Wandsworth Town, Tooting and Southfields.

The council was criticised earlier this year when 32 children failed to secure a primary school place on results day.

Wandsworth Times:

Councillor Rex Osborn, leader of the opposition, said: "It’s encouraging to see that the council has got more primary school places coming on stream for 2015, but this will be no consolation for the many parents who were unable to get a place at a primary school in their local area for this September.

"Wandsworth seriously underestimated the demand for primary school places this year, and many families have been forced to send their children to a school which is nowhere near their home.

"I sincerely hope that Wandsworth has got its sums right for next year."

The expansion will mean an additional 120 primary school places will be available for local children.

Wandsworth Times:

Councillor Kathy Tracey, Wandsworth’s education spokesman, said: "This is good news for parents who want their children to attend high-achieving local schools. Expanding Hillbrook, Allfarthing and Albemarle will provide additional primary classroom places in parts of the borough where pressure on places is at its greatest.

"We have also drawn up detailed long term plans to ensure that we have enough places in the years ahead. This involves expanding some of our best performing and most popular schools, supporting the growth of free schools and opening two new academies in Putney and Earlsfield."

The additional classes will open in September 2015.

Over the last three years more than 25 new reception classes have been added to schools across the borough.

Between 2002 and 2011 the number of children being born in the borough soared from 4,080 to 5,477.
