Police have revealed the ‘suspect package’ detonated on Wimbledon Common this afternoon was old agricultural explosives.
Earlier today police cordoned off part of Sutherland Grove, in Southfields, after the package was reported.
Soon afterwards there was a loud explosion on Wimbledon Common – the sound of the authorities carrying out a controlled detonation.
The Metropolitan Police Service would not reveal the contents of the package but this evening the Wandsworth police Twitter account confirmed there was no terrorist or criminal angle.
They said: “An elderly gentleman going through his dad’s things found old agricultural explosives that had been forgotten.
“He inadvertently brought them back all the way from Hampshire.”
