The GPs in charge of Wandsworth’s healthcare have issued advice for people experiencing suicidal thoughts.

In honour of International Suicide Prevention Day, Wednesday, September 10, Wandsworth Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) warned how everything from family breakdowns to debt could lead people to feel suicidal thoughts.

The latest public health data 2010-12 identifies that Wandsworth's mortality from suicide and undetermined injury was higher than the London average but below the England average.

Wandsworth is the fourth highest in south London and the 11th highest in London.

Suicide rates have been found to be higher for those living in poorer areas. Health bosses highlight the wards of Furzedown, Graveney, Latchmere, Queenstown, Roehampton, Tooting and West Hill.

Dr Tom Coffey, local GP and mental health clinical lead for Wandsworth CCG, said: "Although it can be difficult, if you are having suicidal thoughts it is really important to talk to someone you can trust.

"This could be a family member, a friend or a health or social care professional. You should also talk to your GP, who can help with mental health problems by providing advice and treatment, such as medication or counselling.

"I cannot overemphasise the need to stay connected and utilise the support that is available."

Wandsworth residents who feel depressed or anxious can contact the Community Mental Health team on 020 3513 5000 or the Crisis Line on 0800 028 8000.
