The countdown is on to the re-opening of Putney Bridge, with just days left before pedestrians, drivers and cyclists can once again cross the River Thames.
The bridge is scheduled to reopen to all traffic on Friday, September 26 when the £1.5m repair project is expected to finish.
Contractors working on the repair project are now embarking on the final phase of works, which includes improving the drainage underneath and within the bridge.
Vegetation is also being removed from the outside of the bridge parapet and special expansion joints have been added so the bridge can expand and contract without damaging the road surface.
Other final improvements scheduled to take place include new road markings, litter bins and bus stops before traffic lights at the junction with Lower Richmond Road are switched back on.
Councillor Jonathan Cook, transport spokesman, said: "We are now on the final leg of this project and I’m delighted to report that we are still on schedule to finish some two weeks earlier than was originally thought.
"There are still a few jobs to complete before we have finished everything but I am very confident that we will be reopening the bridge on September 26.
"Once again I would like to thank the travelling public for the great patience they have shown right from the start of these important repairs."
