A young man from Battersea died during a half marathon.

The 27-year-old man was taking part in the adidas Run Reigate Half Marathon when he collapsed on Sunday, September 21.

Police were called at 11.40am and the man was taken to East Surrey Hospital, in Redhill, by South East Coast Ambulance Service. He was pronounced dead a short time later. His next of kin has been informed.

The death is currently being treated as unexplained. However, police do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a file will be passed to the coroner.

Inspector Ken Bates, said: “This was a tragic incident in which a young man lost his life and out thoughts are with his family and friends at this extremely difficult time.”

A joint statement from Run Reigate and Reigate and Banstead Borough Council said: "The runner was immediately attended to by an on-site medical emergency team and subsequently transferred to East Surrey hospital by ambulance where he was later pronounced dead.

"It is with great sadness that Run Reigate and Reigate and Banstead Borough Council can confirm the tragic loss of this runner.

"We are deeply saddened by what has happened and we extend our condolences to family members and friends."
