People power prevailed after a community campaign saved a beloved scout hut from development.

The community was devastated when the Magdalen Park Lawn Tennis Club (MPLTC) suddenly announced they had sold the ground in Lyford Road, Wandsworth, on which the Romany Scout Hut lies, to developer Abid David.

A campaign was launched to protect the scout hut

A campaign was launched in May, backed by both local Tory representative Dan Watkins and Labour MP Sadiq Khan, to try and stop plans to build a nursery on a section of the plot.

However, the new owner, Mr David, agreed to sell it to a community interest company (CIC) made up of neighbours and community groups.

The CIC have now agreed the purchase of the Romany and a new lease allowing the scouts, playgroup and other community groups to stay on site.

Mr Watkins, who was one of those leading the CIC, said: "We are delighted with this outcome, which will mean that the much-loved scout troop and playgroup will continue at the site, as well as protecting the Romany's status as a fantastic green oasis for local wildlife."

Adam Law, chairman of 1st Wandsworth Scouts, said: "I'd like to thank all of our supporters for their incredible efforts, as well as the Magdalen Park Lawn Tennis Club and Abid David for listening to the campaign."

Sadiq Khan MP for Tooting, also expressed his delight, stating he was glad the tennis club and developer listened to the message from the community.

The CIC will be owned and managed by residents and the scouts.

Mr David said: "We wish the CIC all the best. We hope the Romany will be able to be enjoyed by and even wider section of the local community."

Alexandra Adam, from MPLTC, said on the club’s website: "Our thanks too, go to Abid David without whom we would still own a piece of land of, at best, questionable worth to the Club. We have much admired his good humour, honesty and integrity which have never wavered despite the most unpleasant abuse directed at him and his family."
