A thorough investigation was launched at a mental health hospital after a whistle-blower made 27 allegations of abuse and neglect.

The Care Quality Commission received an allegation of abuse and neglect concerning 10 patients on the inpatient ward two at Springfield Hospital, Tooting.

An investigation was launched by the police, in consultation with other safeguarding agencies.

None of the claims were substantiated but, as a result of the safeguarding review, the South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust (SWLSTG) made a number of improvements to its services.

This includes all patients being reviewed, including a physical health check, a regular ward-based complaints surgery, safeguarding training and service development plan.

The entire process, including the investigation and safeguarding process lasted six months. The report is confidential and has not been published.

A trust spokeswoman said: "SWLSTG takes all allegations of abuse or neglect very seriously and we immediately took steps to implement our safeguarding process, notifying the local authority, which has a lead role in ensuring local multi-agency co-ordination of investigations.

"Throughout the investigation we worked closely with our partner organisations, including the police, Wandsworth Council and the CQC.

"The safeguarding review found that none of the allegations were substantiated."
