In the 2012/13 school year about 22 per cent of reception children at Wandsworth schools were overweight or obese.
The borough’s health and wellbeing board said by the time children reached year 6 about 35.2 per cent were overweight or obese, meaning levels had increased significantly between reception and year 6.
In response, a multi-agency strategy has been developed for 2014-17, aimed at halting the prevalence of obesity and reduce the burden of death, disability and distress caused by obesity.
Local estimates indicate that 43 per cent of Wandsworth adults are overweight or obese.
Since 2010, an average of almost £600,000-a-year has been spent on procured obesity prevention and treatment services across the borough.
The estimated annual cost to the NHS from obesity related diseases in Wandsworth will be almost £50m in 2015.
