The family of a man with terminal cancer have raised a staggering £90,000 in 18 months.

Charlie Young, 32, from Clapham Junction, had stage three testicular cancer diagnosed in October 2012, just a month after he proposed to his fiancée Jessica.

He underwent 13 rounds of chemotherapy at the Royal Marsden cancer hospital, in Sutton, and three major operations.

After initially being given the all-clear in November 2013 he flew out to marry Jessica in Australia.

However, two months later, he relapsed for a second time and was told he could no longer be cured. Last month Mr Young organised a charity ball, Balls to Cancer, at his old school Wellington College, in Berkshire.

Simon Cowell, Piers Morgan, Thom Evans and Sir Steve Redgrave were just some of the celebrities who made a surprise screen appearance at the ball.

More than 240 guests attended the event which raised £43,000 for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.

Mr Young said did not expect to raise such a huge amount and had aimed to make £20,000.

He said: "It was a real sense of achievement and I was overwhelmed by the support from my friends and family.

"We have been fundraising for 18 months, we planned this event six months ago. The money will be used to improve cancer research, diagnosis and treatment. The hospital means everything to me.

"I have had the best treatment and care available and this event was the least I could do to show my appreciation.

"The staff have been excellent, I am particularly grateful for the nurses who have to put up with a lot but do an outstanding job."

Every year the Royal Marsden provides treatment and care for more than 50,000 cancer patients.
