The MP for Tooting Sadiq Khan has been accused of using his mobile phone while driving.

Mr Khan was doorstepped by journalist Harry Cole at the Southbank Centre today

The former transport minister and an award-winning road safety campaigner has allegedly been photographed looking at his phone while at the wheel.

A witness has reportedly sent a photograph to police appearing to show Mr Khan, in a Volkswagen, at about 9am yesterday in central London.

This year Mr Khan was awarded National Road Safety Campaigner of the Year by the charity Brake.

The Conservative MP Justin Tomlinson has written to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe calling for an investigation.

Mr Tomlinson told the BBC Daily Politics show today: "There were two things that got me angry yesterday.

Wandsworth Times:

Mr Khan tells Mr Cole: "You've seen my response."

"First of all the fact that he had worked with the very same charities that I had, he was the parliamentary champion for road safety, and he had personally boasted that he had campaigned on this issue for nine years.

"And secondly we are all human, we all do make mistakes yet he has gone into hiding. The irony is he has now switched his phone off.

"His local media, the radio, your programme today, nobody can get hold of him. He should put his hands up and say ‘I am sorry, I understand the importance of this issue’."

Angry: Mr Tomlinson has written to the Metropolitan Police Commissioner

The Wandsworth Guardian have tried to contact Mr Khan for comment today.

A statement posted on his website said: "Allegations have been made that earlier this week, I was seen glancing down at my phone whilst in my car.

"I understand from media reports that a Conservative MP has reported this matter to the Metropolitan police. It goes without saying that I will co-operate fully with any investigation."

Photographs showing the alleged incident were published online by the Guido Fawkes blog.
