Plans to redevelop some of Battersea’s most famous council estates are on show.

Wandsworth Times:

Proposals for the Winstanley and York Road estates have been developed in consultation with residents over the last two years.

The homes were built in the 1960s and 1970s and rap group So Solid Crew formed on the Winstanley estate.

Wandsworth Council plans to borrow £100m to transform the huge area.

Plans, announced in February this year, include demolishing 700 homes and building 2,000 in their place.

Research found only nine per cent of residents wanted moderate change, compared to 57 per cent who wanted the most drastic changes.

An exhibition is taking place today, from 2pm to 5pm, at York Gardens Library. Another session will take place tomorrow from 10am to 1pm.

The redevelopment will see hundreds of homes rebuilt alongside a new park, community, library and leisure centre.

The exhibition will update residents on Inkster and Penge House refurbishment plans, proposals for the Bramlands area, plans for the York Road Estate, proposals for Grant Road and Winstanley public realm improvements.

The estates are located next to Clapham Junction Station and are visible from the platforms.

The council has promised that every council tenant and resident leaseholder who needs to move out of the old buildings will be offered a new home on the estate or close by.

The estates have been named as Boris Johnson's first ‘housing zones’ earmarked for regeneration.

The status means the Mayor of London, the Greater London Authority, Transport for London and Network Rail will prioritise the area, working with Wandsworth Council, to regenerate the area.

Last year David Cameron's big society advisor blasted the council, branding conditions in a housing estate as "Soviet-era care."
