A silver handgun, rifles and boxes of ammunition are just some of the illegal items being handed in to Battersea police.

Battersea Sergeant Nathan Shickle has been posting photographs of the haul as part of the Metropolitan Police Service’s firearms amnesty targeting guns and gangs.

We asked the Met Police for more details on the guns photographed by Sergeant Shickle and published on Twitter.

However, we were told a press release would be released following the conclusion of the scheme, they did not have a borough breakdown and that “initial classification of the weapons may be subject to change once forensic examination is complete”.

Sixty-eight firearms and 1,000 rounds of ammunition have been handed in so far by Londoners at police stations across the capital, during the Met’s first firearms surrender in six years.

The amnesty will run until 11pm on November 23. Before that date, those surrendering firearms will be spared prosecution for illegal possession and can remain anonymous, although police reserved the right to prosecute if the weapons have been used in crimes.

Each live weapon will be forensically checked for evidence.

Battersea has been home to numerous shootings in recent years. In September this year father-of-one Sebastian Jamal Hyman-Knight, 21, was shot in the head in Tennyson Street. Three men have been charged with his murder and are due to appear at the Old Bailey next month.

In September, last year, 19-year-old Kyle McDonald was shot in Kamabala Road. A man was found not guilty of his murder by an Old Bailey jury and no-one has been caught for his killing.
