Wandsworth is set to get a 26-storey tower and 201 new homes after a town centre regeneration project was approved.

Wandsworth Times:

The council’s planning applications committee agreed the plans to merge and redevelop three sites linking Garratt Lane and Wandsworth High Street.

The existing buildings consist of a nine-storey block owned by South Thames College and two council buildings.

The new development will feature four new buildings.

One red-brick four-storey block will face Wandsworth High Street and contain a shop. At the back it will rise to seven-storeys.

The new building on Garratt Lane will replace the existing 1960s office block and will be between four and seven-storeys high.

Two big buildings will be situated in the middle of the development, set back from the streets, and will contain a library.

The library will open out onto a new public square with seating and a play area.

The council said 50 out of the 201 homes will be for locals to rent or buy at a reduced cost.

The project is just one of many being undertaken in Wandsworth Town, which includes the Southside Shopping Centre, Wandsworth Business Village, the Ram Brewery, Lion House and The Filaments.

Transport for London are alsoworking on a redesign of the Wandsworth gyratory.

Planning applications committee chairman Sarah McDermott said: "The new buildings along the high street and Garratt Lane are a huge improvement on the tired blocks they replace. Their design and size is much more appropriate and the new shops will make an active contribution to the street."
