A 20mph speed limit is coming to swathes of Balham and Tooting.

During a consultation last year residents overwhelmingly backed plans to slow down drivers on the roads.

The new 20mph zone will cover all streets in Balham’s Bedford ward and the Furzedown area of Tooting.

In Bedford 76 per cent of those who responded were in favour, with only 14 per cent against. Meanwhile in Furzedown 80 per cent approved of the plans compared to 13 per cent who did not.

The overall cost of change is expected to be about £120,000 and will include improved signs.

Wandsworth Times: Councillor Jonathan Cook warned some street collections are scams

Transport spokesman Councillor Jonathan Cook said: “This has been a great example of local democracy in action.

“It is only right and proper that these types of decisions are made by local people. It would be quite wrong to impose restrictions like this without a specific mandate and the agreement of the people whose communities would be affected by this change.”

Wandsworth Times:

MP Sadiq Khan and Councillor Rex Osborn leader of Wandsworth Labour

The local Labour Party campaigned for the zones and Tooting MP Sadiq Khan said: “I am extremely pleased that after years of campaigning the work to introduce 20mph speed limits in Furzedown and parts of Balham and Tooting Bec is about to begin.

“This success is yet another example of the power of perseverance and community campaigning.”

Mr Khan said they would now be working to bring 20mph zones to the rest of Tooting, Earlsfield and Wandsworth Common.
