Work on the A3 Huguenot bridge started today as part of Transport for London's (TfL) £4bn modernisation plans.

The re-waterproofing and resurfacing will continue until late May, between 7.30am to 10.30pm Monday to Friday and 7.30am to 5.30pm at weekends.

The 35-year-old bridge carries traffic into Wandsworth town centre and Transport for London plans to monitor the area during the road works to keep delays to a minimum.

Two of the four lanes from Battersea Rise to Wandsworth High Street will be closed and the bus lane suspended, with two lanes for traffic at all times.

Overnight work to refurbish the bearings supporting the structure and put in new pigeon netting to the underside of the bridge will take place from Monday, February 16, to late May.

Dana Skelly, director of asset management for surface transport at TfL, said: "Our £4bn road modernisation plan will ensure the capital's red routes remain usable for many years to come. We appreciate drivers' patience during these vital maintenance works to the A3 Huguenot bridge and are committed to keeping disruption caused by these closures to a minimum.

"We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused and ask people to check @tfltrafficnews for the latest traffic news."

Roadside message signs will alert drivers to the closure in advance and during the works to minimise delays. Letters have also been sent to residents informing them of the works and live traffic information will be put on the TfL website.
