Making waves: This design is reminiscent of ripples on on water

The names of the architects and engineers behind these competing designs are being kept secret to ensure a level playing field between the newcomers and the famous.

The pedestrian and cycle bridge over the River Thames will be situated between Vauxhall and Chelsea bridges.

Although they cannot be identified some of the biggest names in the business are said to be taking part, as well as those tipped to be up and coming talent.

The designs, from suspension to cantilever, have been unveiled for the first time today and will go on display in Nine Elms and Pimlico.

Wandsworth Council is seeking people’s views which will be fed back to the competition’s jury panel that includes Wandsworth Council leader Ravi Govindia, Lambeth councillor Joanne Simpson, architect Graham Stirk, engineer Henry Bardsley and Cabe chair Pam Alexander.

In March 2015 the panel will recommend a shortlist of up to four teams to go through to the next stage where they will have to develop more detailed plans.

Coun Govindia said: “To succeed this bridge must be two things at once. It must be a beautiful piece of architecture and a valuable new transport link.”

On the north side of the river exhibitions will be held at Westminster Boating Base, 136 Grosvenor Road, today, February 23, 11am to 7pm, and on Tuesday, February 24, 9am to 7pm.

Open air: Many of the designs act not only as a bridge but as a viewing platform

South Bank exhibitions will take place at Rose Centre, Ascalon Street, Battersea, on Friday, February 27, 1pm to 7pm, and Saturday, February 28, 10am to 6pm.

Already, £26m has been committed to the project through the development of Nine Elms.

Striking: A design that intertwines pedestrian and cycle bridges

The former industrial region is undergoing a multi-billion pound regeneration.

Already home to Battersea Power Station and New Covent Garden Market, the area will also become home to the new Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the new US Embassy and two new town centres at Vauxhall and Battersea Power Station.
