Firefighters urged people to get to know their fire plan, after a blaze broke out in Point Pleasant, Wandsworth.
The blaze broke out on Sunday just after 2pm on March 22.
Wandsworth fire station crew manager Lewis said: "The resident heard a bang and found that smoke was coming out of an electrical cupboard. He did the right thing and got out of his affected flat. A woman in the adjacent flat stayed put which was also the right thing to do, as the corridor had started to fill with heavy smoke.
"A further 50 people self evacuated but they would have been far safer had they remained in their unaffected flats rather than going into smoke-filled corridors or tripped up on firefighting equipment.
"Living in a flat is not more dangerous than living in a house, but it’s important to know what your fire plan is and how you’d escape if a fire did break out."
The fire was under control at 3pm and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
