Shouts of "We love you Boris" filled the streets of Wandsworth as the Mayor of London lent his hand to Jane Ellison's election campaign.

Commuters returning to Wandsworth Town station were greeted by the Conservative parliamentary candidate before many seized the opportunity to take a selfie with Boris Johnson.

With cars beeping their horns and cyclists ringing their bells to signify his presence, Mr Johnson praised the work Ms Ellison had done to support Battersea Arts Centre following its devastating fire.

He said: "Obviously I was horrified to see what happened at Battersea Arts Centre but can congratulate Jane on what she has done. Anything we can do in City Hall [to support Battersea Arts Centre], we will."

Turning his attention to the Battersea parliamentary constituency, Mr Johnson recalled visiting the area years ago and branded the changes as "extraordinary".

He said: "I came here seven or eight years go before I was selected and I made a speech and it was totally different. It has come up so much and improved so much and is now part of the cycle highway.

"Jane is an exceptional MP and has a good record - she is a great asset to Parliament and this area.

"Go back to the riots of 2011, Jane was there. She had campaigned for the bikes to be extended to the area and she has led the way on FGM. By raising awareness on it, we had the first prosecution in 20 years on it."

Mr Johnson, who is standing for election in Uxbridge and South Ruislip, was also quizzed on next year's London mayoral elections.

Last month, Sadiq Khan, Tooting's Labour parliamentary candidate, came under fire for not making his intentions clear about whether he plans to stand in the election in May 2016.

When questioned about whether he believed Mr Khan would stand in next year's mayoral election, Mr Johnson said: "Let's wait and see. I am very much hoping there are some very good candidates."
