A couple from Clapham enjoyed two life changing moments in one as they tied the knot while completing the London marathon.

Paul Elliott, 41, and Laura Harvey, 34, ran the 26.2 miles across London on Sunday, April 26, to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and made the day even more memorable by getting married half way through the route.

Mr Elliott carried his new wife across the finish line after completing the event in six hours and 22 minutes, which included stopping to say their wedding vows.

The couple decided to have a wedding day with a difference in honour of Mr Eilliott's dad, Mark, who died from bowel cancer in December 1995.

Mr Elliott, a HR advisor at Imperial College London, said: "It has been such an emotional day and I’m overjoyed to be married to Laura.

"The last few miles were tough going but having my wife by my side certainly helped.

"We’ve managed to raise more than £5,000 for Cancer Research UK in memory of my dad so hopefully we’ve made him really proud."

The newlyweds, who wore specially crafted wedding outfits suitable for running, ran the first half of the marathon separately before meeting half way round at St Katharine's Dock for their wedding ceremony, which was watched by 80 guests.

Completing the rest of the marathon together, the couple crossed the finish line and enjoyed a well earned rest and outfit change before making their way to their evening reception.

Ms Harvey, a physiotherapist at Whittington Hospital, said: "The atmosphere has been electric and to be able to share it all with our family and friends has made it really special.

"We’ve done so much training together that I found running the first half on my own a bit strange but it made our reunion even more meaningful.

"The last leg was definitely tough but I think we were both so euphoric and had such great support from the crowds that we were carried round."

The couple now plan to relax at until they jet off to the Bahamas for their honeymoon.
