A woman has been hospitalised with multiple injuries after being struck by a falling billboard in Tooting.

Wandsworth Times:

The advertising board collapsed at the junction of Mitcham Road and Mellison Road.

Neighbours reported hearing a loud noise as the 20ft-wide digital billboard came crashing down, pinning the woman to the floor.

Witnesses said she is lucky to be alive after the board, thought to weigh at least a tonne, collapsed, bringing rubble and bricks with it.

It is thought the woman was trapped under the board for some time before she was released.

A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We were called at 7.33am to reports of an incident on Mellison Road at the junction of Mitcham Road.

"We sent a number of resources to the scene including a responder by car, two duty station officers and our hazardous area response team.

"We treated a woman reported to be in her thirties for leg and hip injuries. She was taken to St George's Hospital as a priority."

A number of ambulances, as well as a fire crew, were called to the junction.
