Results of a six-week consultation into a major revamp of Wandsworth town centre and the removal of the gyratory showed a public belief radical change is needed.

Roads: The Mayor of London wants change as well

Transport for London (TfL), which aims to reduce congestion and make the area better for pedestrians, cyclists and buses, consulted residents, businesses, community associations and local MPs during six weeks to December 5, 2014.

The plans, which would involve re-routing the A3 and A205 South Circular to the north of the town centre along Armoury Way in both directions, were supported by about 61 per cent of respondents to the initial public consultation.

Another 70 per cent of respondents agreed the current traffic system performed poorly, with many commenting that it was unpleasant or difficult to use and navigate.

The Mayor of London Boris Johnson agreed, and said: "This car-clogged one-way system has made the area particularly hostile to pedestrians and cyclists.

"These major improvements will see the junction completely transformed and turned into a much more civilised place for everyone, encouraging more people to use the local high street and driving wider regeneration of the area."

As well as re-routing major roads, TfL wants to increase trees and seating and improve pedestrian crossings and bus stops.

Although respondents to the consultation were overwhelmingly in favour of the suggested improvements, some of the 1,882 who responded did raise some further concerns.

These included the impact the changes would have on traffic flows and journey time, concerns about the possibility of new rat runs being created in areas such as St Ann’s Hill and the Tonsleys and worries about how access to businesses in Smugglers Way would be affected.

Leader of Wandsworth Council Councillor Ravi Govindia said: "We’re pleased there is strong support for the scheme and we will examine the local concerns raised in detail to see how our designs can be developed and improved."

A further consultation when more detailed plans are released will take place later this year, with construction planned to begin in 2017.
