Emus, wallabies and Scottish Wildcats will be uprooted from their home at Battersea Park Zoo, as the attraction became the latest to be impacted by construction  ahead of the Formula E Championship.

Animals are being temporarily rehomed due to construction work taking place in preparation for the electric racing car series set to take place on June 27 and 28.

The zoo's resident emus have been moved to a sister zoo, The New Forest Wildlife Park, Hampshire.

The zoo were told that the work could severely disrupt the animals.

Wallabies, maras and Scottish wildcats are set to join the emus from June 23 to June 30, when the Formula E takes place. During this time the zoo will be closed.

Wallabies will be moved from Battersea to Hampshire

A spokesperson for the zoo, said: “The animals have been temporarily relocated at the recommendation of our vets, as well as a number of external vets.”

This is just the most recent of a number of disruptions caused by the construction at Battersea Park when pedestrians, among them children, found themselves walking amid the forklifts and lorries on their daily commute earlier this week.

As part of the works, walls and terraced stands are being brought in and the event is expected to draw in 30,000 visitors on each day of the weekend of racing.

The zoo is set to reopen on July 1 from 10am.
