Wandsworth is one of London’s most successful councils at turning around the lives of its most vulnerable families.

New figures report that since its beginning in 2012, the Wandsworth Family Recovery Project has helped 660 families overcome difficulties.

Of the families who received support from the programme, 94 per cent now have children who attend school regularly, no longer subject their numbers to antisocial behaviour and commit less or no crime.

This figure rises to 100 per cent in families in which an adult has begun working.

Louise Carey, head of the Government’s troubled families programme, said: "It’s fantastic news that the Wandsworth team has now turned around the lives of so many troubled families in the borough. That’s 660 families where kids are back in school and youth crime and antisocial behaviour has been cut."

As part of the programme, a dedicated worker is assigned to families to directly address its troubles and ensuring children attend school and appointments are met.

Children’s services spokeswoman Councillor Kathy Tracey said: "By helping them bring their lives back into focus and tackling these issues in a joined-up way, it improves their lives, creates better citizens and makes the borough an even better place to live."
