Crowds lined a street closed by the council to welcome home a teenager who used his gap year to raise £60,000 cycling around the world.

Wandsworth Times:

Tom Davies, 19, returned home to scenes of joy on Sunday, August 9, as he peddled along Ballingdon Road, Battersea to complete his 18,000 mile journey.

Mr Davies, set out on his epic quest in January this year, and cycling eastwards, travelled through Europe, Asia, Australia, New Zealand and North America before returning to Europe via Lisbon and cycling to the UK.

He was looking to become the youngest person to cycle around the world and although Guinness World Records do not recognise “youngest” records, the Strictly Cycling Club member believes he is the first to have completed the feat.

Mr Davies, who was first inspired when cycling with his father from London to Chamonix in the French Alps, described the trip as an enormous personal challenge.

Wandsworth Times:

He said: “It has been incredible to see the countries and experience the different cultures in this way, while also pushing myself harder than I ever thought possible.

“I have been overwhelmed by the hospitality of people all around the world, which is something I did not necessarily expect, but has made it much more rewarding.

“I am delighted that the three charities will benefit from my trip, and cannot express how grateful I am for all the support from my family, friends and almost everyone who has heard about it.

Ballingdon Road, Battersea, was closed off for Tom's homecoming

“The past seven months have been very intense and I am looking forward to a few weeks off before heading to university.”

On his journey he was held up by snow in Greece, chased by dogs in Albania and crossed the Nullarbor Desert in Australia in a bid to raise money for three charities; Sohana Research Fund, Prostate Cancer UK and Carney’s Community.

He ensured he adhered to key criteria on his trip such as using the same bike frame and starting and finishing at the same point.
