Two shoplifters snatched a box of CCTV equipment and ran to a car at about 9.50am, but could not get in, so ran off.
Police discovered what they thought was an Uzi inside the car, which was parked in Burstock Road.
Wandsworth CID inspected the gun and later found it was an imitation, incapable of being fired.
