Campaigners were joined by MPs, councillors and environmental figures united to protest against a third runway at Heathrow at Parliament Square on Saturday.

All five mayoral candidates from the major parties, including Richmond Park MP and Conservative candidate Zac Goldsmith and Labour’s Tooting MP Sadiq Khan, spoke against expansion.

Chairman of campaign group Hacan John Stewart, who helped organise the rally, said: “The message to David Cameron is clear. People and politicians are united in the opposition to a new runway at Heathrow.”

The Prime Minister’s cabinet is examining the Davies Commission report, which recommended a third runway at Heathrow in July, as Gatwick chiefs continue to make the case for expansion at the Sussex airport.

Wandsworth Times:

Twickenham MP Tania Mathias, who attended the rally, said she was not surprised many people from the borough were present on Saturday, and she was proud to share a platform with the other campaigners.

Dr Mathias said: "The status quo is not good enough, let alone what it would be like with an expanded Heathrow.

I am grateful to the many residents who turned up and who write to me regularly about Heathrow for making their voices heard – and I am committed to doing all I can as the MP to fight Heathrow expansion.”

Campaign director for pro expansion group Back Heathrow, Rob Gray, said the rally did not accurately reflect the views of most people living near the airport and the number of people who turned up on Saturday must have disappointed organisers.

He said: "The Airports Commission gave David Cameron the mandate he needs, so now is the time for action."
