A commemorative stone and plaque have been unveiled celebrating construction of the entrance of new school being built at the site of the former Putney Hospital.

Councillor Leslie McDonnell, deputy mayor of Wandsworth was on hand yesterday for the milestone at Oasis Academy Putney, which is set to open in September 2016 with 60 reception places, with hopes of reaching its full capacity of 420 children by 2022.

Coun McDonnell said: "This is an important new chapter in the history of the site.

"The opening of a new primary school here next September will continue serving the people of Putney for years to come."

Located on Putney Lower Common, Lower Richmond Road, the primary school will be provided by charitable group Oasis, responsible for 44 primary and secondary academies across the UK.

Wandsworth Times:

Steve Chalke, founder of the Oasis Trust, the charity responsible for the new school, said: "Generations of Putney children will pass this stone on the way into their school each day to be reminded of their heritage as well as challenged and inspired about their own place in the local community."

Putney Hospital has been vacant ever since it closed in 1998 and was acquired by the council as the site for the new school in 2012.

The proposed plans for the academy were approved by the High Court in November 2013 after opponents lost their High Court bid to block the scheme.
