A creative and digitally focused community hub could be the future of Putney Library, as a consultation by the friends group is launched.

The Friends of Putney Library, a group celebrating its second birthday, is consulting on the future of services at the library to ensure they are "relevant and responsive" to the needs of the community.

Issues raised in the consultation include the introduction of new groups, the development of a cultural centre after the Putney School of Art and Design began running courses there.

A spokesman for the Friends of Putney Library said: "These are challenging times for libraries.

"If the pace of change were not challenging enough, the financial cutbacks mean that services must be developed with great care.

"Wandsworth Council outsourced its library and heritage provision in 2012 to Greenwich Leisure Ltd. (GLL), on the basis of no less of service and making savings of £800,000 per year."

Since the hand over of the libraries to GLL, Putney Library has benefitted from new computers and software, increased opening hours, author talks and children's events.

The consultation is in partnership with Greenwich Leisure Ltd. and Wandsworth Borough Council.

The consultation is open to anyone, including non library users.
