More than 400 people have signed a petition to make a "dangerous" crossing near a primary school safer.

The ‘Safer Durnsford Road’ campaign was started by mother Tracey Knowles, who grew concerned after a child was almost hit at the crossing outside a Sainsbury’s Local in Durnsford Road, Wimbledon, earlier in the year.

Durnsford Road is notorious for accidents. In March this year a pizza delivery driver on a moped was badly injured after colliding with a car at the junction of Dunsford Road and Weir Road. At the same junction in May 2014, 91-year-old Edward Brzezinski died after being hit by a car.

And in November 2014 a 24-year-old jogger faced life threatening injuries after being hit by a car crossing the junction at Arthur Road.

Mrs Knowles, 44, of Trentham Street, Wimbledon, has two young children at Wimbledon Park Primary School, and has been frustrated by the lack of action taken to make the crossing safer and is concerned that the growing number of children attending the school will increase the likelihood of an accident.

She and a group of mums want to see the parking bay next to the crossing removed, which she claims obstructs the view of both pedestrians and drivers, and a 20 mile per hour zone put in around the school.

Mrs Knowles said: "Cars don’t notice there’s a crossing there at all. I have had to literally pull my son out of the way of a van that was bombing along down there.

"There’s also a lot of articulated lorries because we’re near to a few industrial estates. We often see drivers on the phone."

Leader of the Conservatives Councillor Oonagh Moulton, who is supporting the campaign, has said she will present the petition at full council tonight.

Coun Moulton said: "Durnsford Road is a really bad road with children crossing. There’s also the Durnsford Rec so a lot of people are crossing there, children and dog walkers, all sorts. It’s a big issue. Better safety is needed."

Merton's cabinet member for environment sustainability and regeneration, Councillor Andrew Judge, said: "The council takes the safety of all road users very seriously.

"Our road safety team visits schools across the borough to give talks and practical workshops to children about being safe on their way to and from school. We also give adults refresher courses on road safety."
