People are willing to put up with extra disruption to bring Crossrail 2 to Tooting Broadway, according to a survey.

Conservative spokesman and campaigner Dan Watkins carried out a survey through his website, BalhamorTooting.org.uk set up after Transport for London (TfL) announced the consultation would look at Balham as a station location, not Tooting Broadway.

Wandsworth Times:

A total of 2,342 people responded, with 80 per cent of people voting for Tooting Broadway.

Results were then split by area, with 90 per cent of those from Tooting supporting the station there, regardless of the legnth of time the project is estimated to take at Tooting Broadway.

According to TfL, building a station at Tooting Broadway would cost £1bn, and take eight years to complete, with land required from Sainsbury's, South Thames College, and retail units in Mitcham Road, Tooting High Street and Upper Tooting Road.

Of respondents in the north of Balham, 75 per cent supported a station in Balham, but further south, residents were split 50/50.

Mr Watkins said: "Despite the extra disruption that Tooting residents would face locally, a station at Tooting Broadway is our community's overwhelming choice.

"I will continue to work with Wandsworth Council to keep Tooting Broadway on the table for Crossrail 2, which I believe offers far greater benefits for regeneration in our part of London.

"This substantial survey of our community demonstrates that TfL needs to provide much more information supporting its preference for Balham if they are to convince local residents that it is the best option."

Tooting Broadway was dropped from the consultation after the discovery of poor ground conditions.

For a station in Balham, an access shaft would be required in the Bolingbrooke Grove of Wandsworth Common. Of respondents near that area, 95 per cent supported the Tooting Broadway station.

David Dean, Conservative candidate for Wandsworth and Merton in the Greater London Assembly said: "The Northern Line is already overcrowded at rush hour, so it is essential that Crossrail intersects with Balham or Tooting to bring capacity for an extra 270,000 peak time journeys."

Michèle Dix, TfL’s Managing Director of Crossrail 2, said: "We are aware of the survey regarding the Balham and Tooting Crossrail 2 station options. "We will acknowledge the survey in our consultation report.

"However, it should not be seen as an alternative to responding to the consultation. We encourage people to respond directly to TfL on our Crossrail 2 proposals before the January 8, 2016. You can do this online at www.crossrail2.co.uk or by requesting a hard copy questionnaire.

"It is still early days and no final decisions have been made."

A spokesman for TfL also made it clear that any previous responses to the consultations done when Tooting Broadway was an option will not be reassessed when this consultation closes and so new responses must be made.

Drop-in sessions begin on November 2 and run until December 18. The consultation will be open until January 8 and responses can be recorded through crossrail2.co.uk.

Drop-in sessions at Tooting Broadway will take place outside 6 Selkirk Road between 12-8pm on November 25 and 26.

Balham sessions will take place outside 3 Balham Grove between 12-8pm on November 27 and 11-4pm on November 28.
