A Battersea teenager has been awarded for his inspirational work after raising nearly £70,000 for three charities and nearly breaking a world record.

Tom Davies used his gap year to cycle around the world covering 18,000 miles between January and August at an average of 100 miles a day.

The 19-year-old, who is now a student at Loughborough University, believes he may be the youngest person to have completed such a feat, but Guinness World Records has been unable to verify it.

On November 9, he was awarded "Most Inspirational Young Person" by Kids Count UK, after being nominated by his MP Jane Ellison.

He said: "I was actually in the middle of a rather tedious physics experiment when I got the email saying I'd won.

"I didn't even know I had been nominated so to have won was amazing. I honestly just felt honoured to be amongst such amazing company.

"I'm really grateful to Kids Count and Jane Ellison because simply to get the recognition means a huge amount."

Mrs Ellison said: "I was very pleased to nominate Tom for an ‘Inspire the House’ award.

"His achievement of becoming the youngest person ever to cycle around the world is extraordinary and to top it off he raised so much money for charity.

"He has done Battersea proud and I am delighted that he was recognised in Parliament with this well-deserved award."

Despite the award, Mr Davies says he has no plans yet for any more adventures.
